Fiction Friday

I’m going to try something new here…

For two days, it had been raining. Mina and Richard had been holed up in their tiny hotel room since the first drops fell Friday night. They were starting to get hungry. They had quickly depleted their supply of snacks in the mini bar; they didn’t think that their room bill would allow for a trip to to hotel ” store.” Neither of them wanted to brave the downpour and drive to a nearby restaurant or grocery. They were constantly watching the weather reports, between enticing commercials for fast food and pizza joints. Many roads throughout the area were closed due to flooding. They were trapped. Some second honeymoon they were on. Finally, Richard suggested…

Breaking the Family Traditions?

I come from a long line of crafters. My mom likes to sew and cross stitch. One of her sisters used to do ornamental painting on wood. Her other sister paints pictures. Their mother, my grandmother, sews as well and does various crafts. My great-grandmother used to do beautiful crocheting. I remember her teaching my sister and I how to make a chain stitch.

I like to sew and cross stitch, as well as paint. There are a few crafts I have tried, but I have always been fearful of anything involving yarn. Until recently.

I first tried to learn knitting. I had one of those round looms, but didn’t realize a scarf would curl up on it. (I had previously made baby hats on it) So I thought I needed to try the knitting needles. This presented many problems: chunky yarn did not mix with size 8 needles; my children would always run off with the needles, leaving a row of empty stitches behind; or making my stitches so tight that I could not insert the needle into them.

I read that crocheting is easier, so I decided to try that instead, as a sort of homage to my great-grandmother. I wanted to be able to make afghans and little doilies like she did. While crocheting has turned out easy, the stitches that make up such beautiful things are not.

I feel like I have no clue what I am doing. I want to be able to create things for my shop so badly, but my head is full of so many things I want to try out. I am in dismay.

Finally More on the Dress

Put together:

Beginning of embroidery:

When I was a beader…

I once learned some basic beading skills and began making some rudimentary pieces. I taught myself a few things, made some stuff up along the way, yet my pieces are still a bit crude.

The black piece in the center is an example of something I just figured out one day, linking little pieces of wire. The outer piece is done with a heart-shaped toggle clasp which I regret using because it does not work well with the obsidian I used. I made the yellow piece to go with an Easter dress which later became my wedding dress.  Alas, it did not fit me any longer when I got married.

Grey Dress

Here is what I currently working on. It is made out of a light cotton knit that is dark grey. It will have short sleeves. I plan to embroider it with various shades of pink.
